Programme: Europe for Citizens
Identifier: 618274-CITIZ-1-2020-1-BG-CITIZ-REMEM
Title: Human Times
Summary
Project activities were successfully implemented in six countries, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Netherlands, Slovenia and Lithuania, involving 1322 direct and approximately 4500 indirect participants in remembrance of common history and discussions about contemporary Union’s values. Two major categories of results can be identified, quantitative and qualitative. The first ones represent physical outcomes and measurable information, like number of participants, while the second ones are rather corresponding to shifts in attitudes, effects, experiences and level of understanding. The activity Research/Analysis resulted in increased knowledge about the period of totalitarian regimes regarding human experience, better understanding of psychological reasons behind different political systems and their relation to personal morality, insights for developing abstract visual concepts, 23 authentic stories of people collected during the activity, and 119 directly involved participants. Main physical outcome is the creation of six art dolls representing the gained insights through the lens of art and reflecting on specific historical facts, human characteristics, behavior and moods: FOUNT OF LIFE - reflects the idea about creation of a pure human race, which is historically connected to the program Lebensborn established in Nazi Germany. HITLER WILL SEND NO WARNING - reflects the idea about human life value in conditions of terror and use of weapons of mass destruction. THE INVISIBLE KILLER OF FREE SPIRIT - reflects the idea about resistance against the crushing of the human spirit in the concentration camp system. The historical context is related to the Belene Concentration camp, situated on a Danube island in Bulgaria. GIVE A CHILD TO THE FUHRER! - reflects the idea about a future created in conditions of total mind control, targeted propaganda and depersonalization in the name of political ambitions. It represents the "brainwashing" from early childhood during the totalitarian regimes.ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MIRROR - reflects the idea about the price of being true to the truth. Inspired by the true story of Krastana Yaneva, one the heroes who gave their lives in the fight against fascism. THE FOREIGN VOICE - MY ESSENCE? - inspired by the theme of censorship of speech and culture during communism. Historically related to the murder of the dissident writer Georgi Markov and the Bulgarian novel “Tobacco”. Main results of the Traveling Exhibition we consider the engagement of 573 direct participants in commemoration of events from the recent past and the recognition of art as a medium for bringing people together and promoting peace. Hosting the exhibition in different locations around Europe resulted also in amplification of tolerance towards other nations and social/cultural groups, and recognition of the Union’s values as universal mindsets for its contemporary citizens. Outcomes of conducting public events are: - 630 direct participants;- large discussions about the reasons and aftermaths from totalitarian regimes in Europe and the democratic Union’s future;- increased awareness of remembrance and interest about common history - most of the participants declared they will continue exploring European history related to the events in 20th century;- inclusion of young people and underrepresented groups in the debate about the democratic European future in contrast to the totalitarian past; - networks of people with different background; - emerging tendency to not repeat the past in the attitudes of the participants. Long-term effects of the public events are: - raised awareness of democratic values and tolerance- sense of unity among people from different countries and ethnic backgrounds- promotion of peace.
