European Health Union: Commission and WHO-Europe discuss priorities for cooperation

date:  01/02/2024

Today, Commissioner Kyriakides will open a high-level meeting between the European Commission and the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Europe, to discuss key challenges to public health and areas of collaboration between both sides. Dr Hans Kluge, Regional Director of WHO-Europe, will also attend and share the WHO’s vision for health up to 2030.

WHO-Europe is an important strategic partner for the EU in addressing regional health issues and is supported with EU funding under EU4Health and other programmes. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, cooperation between both sides has deepened, with a particular focus on boosting preparedness and resilience in health systems, and on tackling current and emerging risks through a One Health approach.

Today’s meeting will cover the most pressing issues for public health policy today, including health security, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, health workforce, mental health and cancer. It will also consider how to strengthen multilateral cooperation in health, particularly given the current complex global environment.
