Online EU-US conference on Long COVID: Registration open

Registration is open for the European Commission’s online, half-day conference on Long COVID on 13 December, which will address current debates on the topic of Long COVID/Post COVID-19 condition.

It has been estimated that approximately 10%-20% of people that were infected by SARS-CoV-2, develop Long COVID. At least 17 million people in the WHO European Region experienced Long COVID in the first two years of the pandemic. In the United States, the Household Pulse Survey (HPS) report of the Census Bureau, showed that in June 2022 around 16 million working-age Americans (those aged 18 to 65) had Long COVID. Very little is known about the clinical manifestations, risk factors and underlying mechanisms of Long COVID. 

Building on the ongoing research and response activities in both the European Union and the United States of America, this conference will bring together renowned experts to:

  1. Exchange experiences and knowledge on research, treatment and health systems’ response
  2. Identify key challenges and knowledge gaps

Confirmed speakers include Sandra Gallina, Director-General of DG Health and Food Safety at the European Commission, Prof. Peter Piot, special advisor to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Prof. Theo Vos, Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, Dr. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Director of COVID Recovery Clinic at University Health, University of Texas Health San Antonio, Prof Evelina Tacconelli, University of Verona, coordinator of the ORCHESTRA project, Dr Joseph Breen, Immunoregulation Section Chief, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and member of the NIH RECOVER consortium, Francesca Colombo, Head of the Health Division at OECD, as well as representatives of patient organisations and policy-makers.
