As announced by Commission President von der Leyen in the State of the Union speech in September, the Commission intends to strengthen EU coordination of preparedness and response to health threats as a first step towards a European Health Union. Options under discussion include strengthening the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to make them better equipped for crises, as well as adapting the cross-border health threats legal framework. 

The EU Health Policy Platform will host a live webinar on ‘Building a European Health Union: preparedness and resilience for cross-border health threats’ on Thursday, 29 October.
Speakers include Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides as well as the European Commission’s Director-General for Health and Food Safety, Sandra Gallina. A question and answer session will provide participants with the opportunity to discuss ideas.
