Friday 16 May 2025, 10.00-13.00
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, mental disorders, neurological disorders, or cancer are responsible for 80% of the disease burden in the EU Member States and the leading causes of avoidable premature deaths.
The human and financial costs of NCDs are high and expected to grow, also considering the EU’s ageing population. Reducing the burden of NCDs requires a comprehensive approach, including tackling health inequalities across the board. Most importantly, health promotion and disease prevention can reduce such diseases by as much as by 70%.
Stepping up work on preventative health is a key priority for the Commission. A special effort will be undertaken to address cardiovascular diseases, the leading cause of deaths in the EU.
On 16 May, the Commission will hold a webinar for all interested stakeholders, focussing in particular, on the EU’s agenda for cardiovascular diseases. The webinar will also be an opportunity to discuss the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Meeting on NCDs, that will take place in September.
The webinar will be an opportunity to engage and discuss with stakeholders on EU health priorities.
