Next week, DG SANTE will host the first EU Platform on Animal Welfare of the new Commission’s mandate. Commissioner Várhelyi will deliver a speech to outline the priorities in animal welfare for his mandate.
The meeting will include a presentation of the Vision for Agriculture and Food, with particular focus on the announced revision of the animal welfare legislation. Consultations and exchanges with stakeholders, in particular farmers, the food industry and civil society, will guide the Commission in preparing the proposed revisions.
During the Platform meeting, participants will discuss priorities for modernising animal welfare legislation for poultry farming, as well as digitalisation and welfare indicators for poultry. Other sectors will be discussed in subsequent meetings.
There will also be a presentation of the a state of play on the European Parliament’s work on the proposals on the protection of animals during transport and the welfare of dogs and cats, and an overview by the Polish Presidency on the ongoing work in Council on the transport proposal.
