Today the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste will be observed for the second time!
The United Nations General Assembly designated 29 September as the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW). The day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the day’s events are led jointly by the two organisations. The goal is to raise awareness to the importance of the problem and mobilise action to reach Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030 and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains.

The EU Food Loss and Waste Prevention Hub
To mark the 2nd edition of the IDAFLW on 29 September 2021, the Commission is launching the EU Food Loss and Waste Prevention Hub, a ‘one-stop-shop’ for information on food waste prevention in the EU. The Hub is a website for stakeholders who take action to fight food losses and food waste, allowing them to share good practices, find relevant information on national actions, such as policies and legislative developments, and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.
The main objective of this platform is to foster the exchange of knowledge and experience and to help disseminate the different initiatives carried out to tackle food losses and food waste, in order to inspire and drive further action across the EU and beyond. Further information about the Hub can be found on its About page.
You are warmly invited to share your knowledge and experience through the Hub. Join the Hub and help us build a growing community striving to reduce food losses and food waste!

The newsletter of the EU FLW Prevention Hub
For the purpose of the new website and in order to avoid overlapping communication channels, the Commission will transform the monthly newsletter of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste into the Hub’s newsletter. The newsletter will include information on food loss and waste prevention initiatives published by stakeholders on the Hub (as resources/news), including those undertaken by members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste. It will also include information on national actions such as policy and legislative developments, sourced from the EU Member State pages of the Hub.
As a reminder, the Platform’s monthly newsletter was launched in March 2020, in the context of the Covid-19 crisis, as a way to stay up-to-date with the latest food loss and waste prevention initiatives taken by the members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste. The newsletter aimed to help Platform members stay connected, to inform all interested stakeholders about Platform members’ activities and inspire further action to prevent food loss and waste. All the Platform’s newsletter editions (April 2020 – June 2021) are published on the Commission’s website (to view the first edition for March 2020, please click here).
