EU Cardiovascular Health Plan: Call for Evidence

date:  11/08/2025

The Commission is inviting input on EU’s future Cardiovascular Health Plan, through a Call for Evidence published today. The call is open to citizens, patient organisations, NGOs, healthcare providers and professionals, research and technology organisations, academia, and other interested parties that wish to give their views.

Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death in the EU, with 1.7 million lives lost every year. They are also the leading cause of disability, premature retirement and absenteeism, lowering quality of life and shortening life expectancy. Illnesses affecting the heart and blood vessels are estimated to cost the EU more than €280 billion per year due to decreased productivity and economic output.

Later this year, the Commission will outline a plan to address the impact of cardiovascular diseases on individuals and health systems and boost competitiveness and innovation. It will address these challenges through initiatives to improve prevention, early detection and screening, management, care and rehabilitation.

The Call for Evidence is a chance for contributors to express their views and share insights on the problems to be solved, the key action areas proposed and the likely impact. It will be complemented by other general and targeted consultations.

The Call for Evidence will run for five weeks, i.e. until 15 September 2025 (midnight Brussels time).
