The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases holds its Formal Meeting

The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases (SGPP) will hold its formal meeting today in Brussels. The meeting will be an opportunity for the representatives of Member States, the European Investment Bank and several European Commission services to discuss a wide range of public health policies and initiatives. Tomorrow, 24 January, there will be a joint meeting of the SGPP with the Horizon2020 Programme Committee devoted to cancer action in the EU.

The Steering Group will have a key role in the strategic planning for the health strand of the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and the health actions of Horizon Europe. Therefore, today’s meeting will begin with discussions on health in the next Multiannual Financial Framework including an update on the negotiations of the ESF+, and continues with discussions on Horizon Europe Actions, including an update on Horizon Europe strategic planning and overview of potential R&I partnerships under Horizon Europe.

The afternoon will start with the Cancer Action Plan and Cancer Mission, after which the group will discuss the implementation of best practices on mental health and reviewing the best practice criteria on vaccinations. The Group will also hold discussions on its future agenda and hear Croatia’s and Germany’s Presidency plans.

Tomorrow, discussions at the joint meeting with the Horizon2020 Programme Committee will be devoted to cancer action in the EU: developing new approaches to research and innovation policies: the challenges in Europe and the opportunities for cooperation, and on developing new approaches to cancer policies: policy needs in Europe and opportunities for EU cooperation.

Background:

The Steering Group on Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Management of Non-Communicable Diseases was formalised in July 2018 with a goal of supporting EU countries in reaching the health targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Commission consults the Steering Group on health priorities and strategic objectives, and on the health policy perspectives of other policies and funding mechanisms.
