The fight against antimicrobial resistance in the EU: EU One-Health Network meets in Brussels today

date:  22/02/2017

Today, representatives of chief veterinary officers and chief public health officers from all 28 EU countries gather in Brussels for the first meeting of the EU "One-Health" Network on AMR, chaired by the Commission. The agenda includes the objectives and working methods of the Network; an exchange of views and contribution of the Member States to the Commission's upcoming action plan on AMR and the role that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) could play in the fight against AMR, focusing on possible contributions, Member States' support and cooperation opportunities.

Background

The Commission is committed to combatting AMR through a 'One-Health' approach involving actions on human health, animal health, the environment and food safety as well as on antimicrobial research and development. The Council Conclusions from 17 June 2016 on "the next steps under a One Health approach to combat antimicrobial resistance" call upon Member States to, within the EU One Health Network, present their national action plans, share best practices, discuss policy options, ways to better coordinate responses and keep each other updated on the progress made on the implementation of the action plans.
