European Commission EUvsVirus Matchathon sets world record to tackle coronavirus challenges
Building on the success of the previous EUvsVirus Pan-European Hackathon, a Matchathon to boost the scaling up of creative solutions to coronavirus challenges, took place from 21 to 28 May under the patronage of Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and the European Innovation Council (EIC). It brought together the 120 winning solutions from the Hackathon with over 458 partners including investors, corporates, public authorities, academia and research institutions from 40 countries.

Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, said:

The Hackathon and Matchathon are good examples of how the European Commission can fast track the development of citizen-led solutions to coronavirus by matching innovators’ needs with the resources of investors, public authorities, corporates and universities. These new partnerships will scale up their innovative solutions over the coming months to tackle the pandemic and speed up European and global recovery.

Joint action against malaria: EIB, European Commission and Investitionsbank Berlin inaugurate €70 million fund
Today, the European Investment Bank (EIB), the European Commission and Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) announced the first closing of their EU Malaria Fund. The EC and the EIB are investing an initial €64 million into the fund, which aims to bridge the gap between molecule and market for feasible and affordable innovative solutions to prevent and treat malaria. € 6 million is brought in by various national and private investors, amongst them IBB and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Commissioner Gabriel said:

We are joining forces with other investors to protect health and save lives. The new EU Malaria Fund is working with a total EU contribution of more than €110 million to boost research efforts and speed up market solutions against this preventable and deadly disease. This is an example of how key global players can come together to fight infectious diseases such as malaria and bring health technologies to those who need them most.
