In this final newsletter of the year, we invite you to reflect on the highlights of 2024, celebrate the progress we've achieved together, and look ahead to new opportunities in 2025. 

This year has been marked by significant milestones: we hosted six Beyond Borders Breakfast Debates, launched and completed two Youth4Cooperation Cross-Border Ambassador mandates, and celebrated numerous events, videos, and inspiring best practice cases that highlight the importance of collaboration across borders. 

Thank you for your ongoing support, engagement and enthusiasm. We wish you joyful holidays and look forward to reconnecting in 2025 for another year of impactful cross-border collaboration!

Youth4Cooperation Cross-Border Ambassadors: A Year in Review

This year, the Border Focal Point Network successfully completed two mandates of the Youth4Cooperation Cross-Border Ambassadors programme.

The first mandate (May–August 2024) united ten young leaders from eight countries to engage with communities and policymakers on cross-border challenges, while the second (October–December 2024) saw even greater interest, with over 60 applicants from 16 countries. 

Programme Highlights:

Throughout 2024, the Ambassadors actively contributed to advancing cross-border cooperation in the following ways: 

  • Involvement in BFPN Initiatives: Participation in the Beyond Borders Breakfast Debates series, including video contributions to the 19th edition by Ninon Paulissen and Simon Erik Jyrkäs. 

  • Creative Contributions: The Ambassadors shared their perspectives on cross-border issues close to their hearts in articles and video testimonials, available in the Library and Multimedia tabs on Futurium respectively.  

  • Policy Advocacy: Ongoing collaboration during monthly meetings with DG REGIO to amplify youth voices in cross-border policy discussions. 

A Big Thank You to Our Ambassadors 

We extend our extreme gratitude to the Youth4Cooperation Ambassadors for their dedication and creativity in promoting cross-border collaboration and representing the interests and priorities of European youth. Their efforts inspire us and highlight the importance of youth-led initiatives in shaping the future of Europe’s borders.

Beyond Borders Breakfast Debates

This year's Beyond Borders Breakfast Debate Series focused on some of the biggest challenges Europe's cross-border regions face.

In six debates, experts and policymakers discussed important topics such as crisis management, access to healthcare, education, public transport, water supply and data-driven policymaking.

With more than 600 participants from 25 countries and 30 expert speakers, the debates were a great opportunity to share knowledge, new ideas and practical solutions for cross-border co-operation.

Coming Up

Launch of the Handbook on Cross-Border Energy Communities – 20th January 2025

On 20 January 2025, the European Commission in Brussels will host the official launch of the Handbook on Cross-Border Energy Communities (CBECs).

This is a comprehensive resource designed to empower citizens and local actors to engage effectively in cross-border energy cooperation. It provides practical information, showcases best practices, and offers solutions to common challenges, including governance, financing, legal frameworks, and methodologies for setting up and managing energy communities across borders. 

The event will introduce the key insights and recommendations from the handbook, alongside interactive sessions to explore its applications and benefits. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how to foster cross-border energy partnerships and address pressing energy challenges collaboratively. Register by 12 January 2024 to secure your spot.

Interreg GO! – on the path to Interreg post-27

In the context of the Interreg post-27 consultation process currently launched in 2023 and about to finalise by the end of this year, the European Commission in cooperation with partners from Italy and Slovenia is organising an event in which the main results stemming from the consultations will be presented and discussed: Interreg GO! 2025.

The event will take place at the end of March 2025 in the symbolic place: twin cities of Gorizia in Italy and Nova Gorica in Slovenia, awarded European Capital of Culture for 2025. This two-day meeting including the high-level event and the Interreg Annual Event will bring together experts and stakeholders to harvest the results of the Interreg's post-2027 consultation process and include discussions on the implementation of the 2021-2027 programmes, capitalisation of results and strategic projects. The event will feature high-level panels addressing future opportunities and challenges in border and transnational regions, the visibility of cooperation and the role of Interreg in the outermost and neighbouring regions.

2024 Stories of Success

As a platform for cross-border initiatives, we showcased a variety of inspiring good practices from projects across Europe.

From emergency response collaborations in Romania and Hungary, and a network of border schools in Spain and Portugal, to a cross-border nursery between France and Germany and river management projects along the Austria-Slovakia border, these initiatives demonstrate the power of working together across borders.

21st Beyond Borders breakfast Debate

Our latest debate of the year, held on Thursday 12 December 2024, had a record of 209 attendees.

The debate presented the ACROSS Data Hub, a new platform offering harmonised data to support cross-border collaboration. 

Speakers highlighted its potential to improve policy-making and tackle challenges in important areas such as public transport, health and governance. Insights from experts from DG REGIO, the Joint Research Centre and ESPON provided an in-depth look at the hub's capabilities and its role in promoting the EU's cohesion policy goals.
