Reduce Cybersecurity Risks With Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-Factor Authentication is being deployed to provide more protection to your accounts. Luckily, the EU Login app is the Commission’s simplified way for you to apply this second layer of authentication when completing your login.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will soon become the norm for all apps and systems storing sensitive personal data about you and your family members.

Ever-increasing cyber risks require additional security measures so that the information about our medical requests and reimbursements remains reliably protected from leaks and misuse. Working closely with DIGIT to increase data security, the PMO is deploying Multi-Factor Authentication for all IT Applications.

What does multi-factor mean?

Using a password alone is considered one factor authentication - "something that you know"; adding a second factor means either requiring "something that you have" or "something that you are".

This means that you can access your accounts by using at least two of these independent factors:

  • Something that you know – e.g., PINs, passwords, answers to security questions.

  • Something that you have – e.g., mobile phones, smart cards, physical tokens, bank cards.

  • Something that you are – biometrics such as fingerprints, retina scans, facial and voice recognition.

You can select your second verification step among different authentication methods, but DIGIT recommends the EU Login mobile app, which is easy to use, saves you time, and provides very strong protection. It also allows you to use biometrics, such as fingerprint and face recognition, if this function is available on your mobile device.

For more information about EU Login, you can consult the following page in My Intracomm.

What do you need to do?

  1. Add a smartphone to your EU Login account.
  2. Download the EU Login mobile app (for IOS or Android) and follow the steps to authenticate via the app. This infographic shows you have to do so.
  3. As an alternative, you can link your electronic ID card to your EU LOGIN account by clicking on 'Link my eID' and then authenticate with an eID. This option requires using an ID card reader or ID identification app. This option is only available for eIDs used by 15 EU countries, including Belgium, Luxembourg and Italy.
