'Revitalize Meri-Toppila: a Workshop for Change' at the AaltoSiilo
date: 06/06/2025
From May 26 to May 31, the AaltoSiilo transformed the neighbourhood of Meri-Toppila in Oulu into a vibrant hub of creativity and community. Supported by Oulu2026 and several European partners, the "Revitalize Meri-Toppila" workshop brought together over 70 students, professionals, artists, and local residents to design and build a Pop-Up Cultural Park, which will remain open throughout the summer of 2025.
Participants collaborated closely with local residents and international architects to develop the designs and construct them on-site using reclaimed materials. The workshop also featured architectural walks around the city, seminars at the University of Oulu, and a closing festival with music, dance, and creative performances. This international-local collaboration breathed new life into Meri-Toppila, showcasing the power of community, creativity, and cultural heritage—and reflecting the core values of the New European Bauhaus.
The workshop forms part of the ongoing transformation of Alvar and Aino Aalto’s first industrial building into a versatile public space. This project is led by Factum Foundation and Skene Catling de la Peña, in collaboration with key partners from Finland and across Europe.
