40 works shortlisted for the 2024 EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture

The 40 works shortlisted are examples of how architects continue to undertake the endeavours to design responsibly, ethically and environmentally. They also highlight the importance that architecture, urban planning and governance need to work together in an even stronger way to achieve long term city projects. Among the selected works, an important number are transnational projects, and half of the selected works are located in relatively small cities and towns.

Proposal to revise energy performance of buildings directive confirmed

In December 2023, the Council and the Parliament reached a provisional political agreement to reduce the emissions and energy use of buildings across the EU. The strengthened Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) will support the EU's efforts to decarbonise buildings across the whole Union. This is an area in which the concrete impact of the European Green Deal will improve the quality of life for people, in their homes and workplaces, and lower their energy bills. This deal will also boost Europe's energy independence in line with the REPowerEU Plan and make a strong business case for a cleaner buildings sector in the EU.

[report]: Lviv hospital project presentation

The aim of the presentation was to inform the NEB Community and other relevant NEB stakeholders about an emerging and inspiring NEB pilot project taking shape on the ground in Ukraine.

The Lviv Hospital project proposes an expansion of the largest hospital in Ukraine in the city of Lviv, which has been receiving a vast number of patients, both civilian and military, from the war zone since February 2022. The project proposal was approved by the city’s mayor and deputy mayor as well as the hospital officials. The project has received support by the Japanese government, while substantial resources are still needed for its full realisation.

The project was presented by an award-winning Japanese architect and a member of the High-level Round Table Shigeru Ban, and a city architect representing the Municipality of Lviv, Anton Kolomieitse. You can watch the recording of the presentation on the EU video platform

Think it, Sketch it, Show it! - Desire toolkit to transform kids’ visions into city realities

In the heart of Gadehavegaard, a residential area in Høje-Taastrup, Denmark with a vision for transformation, eighth-grade students from the local Ole Rømer School have embarked on a unique design journey. Three theme weeks, under the umbrella of the New European Bauhaus project Desire, have brought about innovative ideas for the development of green areas and empowered young minds to shape their surroundings by actively participating in the design process.

The experiences from the journey have inspired development a toolkit - Think it, Sketch it, Show it! - that will simplify the process of involving youngsters in projects for architects and city planners in the future. The intention is to provide an easy-to-use resource for the implementation of engaging co-design activities with young people.
