Experience La Biennale di Venezia!

On 25-26 May 2023 in Venice, the New European Bauhaus will present Radical yet possible future space solutions, a Collateral Event of the 18th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.

The NEB conference will feature a number of high-level speakers from all around the globe such as Professor Annette Hafner, architects Rem Koolhaas and Shigeru Ban, social entrepreneur and activist Alexandra Mitsotaki, and many others. It is curated by innovation economist and digital expert Francesca Bria, physicist Hans Joachim Schellnhuber and architect Wael al Awar.

The participants will reflect on radical, yet possible, human actions leading to a better use of space and resources. In particular, they will discuss new ways of living, and how to go beyond the conviction that the future of the humankind is bound to already existing solutions.

Day 1:

The registration is open to students only. Following two masterclasses by architects, six groups of experts and students will join parallel discussions in the ‘Radical NEB Labs’, to work towards collective solutions for a sustainable future, understood as new ways of living, learning, designing, building, energy and material sourcing.

Day 2:

The registration is open to all and will be live streamed. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will kick off a series of interdisciplinary debates involving some of the most recognised architects of our time and international experts from several fields. Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira will close the conference by pointing to opportunities to scale up New European Bauhaus approaches within EU spending programmes.

Please note that the places are limited! If you cannot make it, you can still follow the live stream here, stay tuned!

LIFE call to support Ukrainian cities

The EU funding programme LIFE for environmental projects, has launched a call that focuses on supporting Ukrainian cities.

As announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Kyiv on 2 February, the call embraces the New European Bauhaus approach and focuses on supporting Ukrainian cities’ actions with sustainable and inclusive reconstruction, including building capacity in waste and water management.

Next to that, a dedicated Horizon Europe call should identify a core group of Ukrainian cities that would commit to a climate neutrality target, including in reconstruction efforts. The goal is to accelerate the systemic transition to climate-neutrality of Ukrainian cities by preparing local authorities to meet the overarching objectives of the European Green Deal.

In addition, the LIFE programme also offers a more general call that is open to Ukrainian organisations who would like to link their work to the New European Bauhaus.

This is why, on the 5th of May from 11:00-13:00 CET/12:00-14:00 EET, the NEB will organise an information session, specifically for organisations in Ukraine and international organisations interested to team up for reconstruction with Ukrainians to get more information on these specific open calls. There will also be opportunities to ask questions.

On the day, you will be able to follow the session here.

LIFE call for NEB Academy

The EU funding programme LIFE for the environment and climate action launched also a call for the development of skills in sustainable construction in the framework of the NEB Academy.

The call will be open until 7 September, and award one project expected to contribute to NEB Academy in:

  • Setting up a NEB Academy Hub (for on-site trainings), online trainings, a summer school, workshops, or other relevant activities;
  • Mapping needs and/or existing skilling initiatives on sustainability in the construction ecosystem;
  • Testing pilot projects on using sustainable materials for construction (focusing on wood and other biomaterials);
  • Promoting skills sharing initiatives and technology transfer.

An info session already took place on the call on April 25/26 (as part of a broader set of LIFE calls); you can find here more information.
