On 29 May, the International Budget Partnership launched its Open Budget Survey—the world’s only comparative, independent, and regular assessment of transparency, oversight and participation in national budgets. This latest round assessed 125 countries, which are home to 95% of the world’s population and include budgets totaling more than $33.5 trillion in spending in Fiscal Year 2022.  While global transparency levels remain steady, the survey found that countries are not as transparent and inclusive as they could be on debt sustainability and spending for social sectors (see press release in English, French, and Arabic). The launch event had more than 1200 registrants from more than 130 countries and included speakers from various regions, including IBP partner Karim Trabelsi from the General Labor Union of Tunisia. The survey assessed the following countries in the EU's Southern Neighborhood: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia, and included a pilot in Libya.
