DG NEAR is organising an event at COP 28 entitled: High level roundtable on a Euro-Mediterranean cleantech cooperation.

The event is taking place on Saturday 2nd December, at the EU Pavilion in Dubai from 13:00 to 14:30 (local time).

This event will discuss the potential and opportunities for the development of a cleantech cooperation within the Mediterranean, in a manner that both complements and maximises EU efforts under the Net Zero Industry Act, while also contributing to the Mediterranean’s sustainable development efforts.

Cleantech represents a diverse range of products, services, and processes intended to provide superior performance at lower costs, while reducing or eliminating negative environmental and climate impacts. Stepping up cleantech development is central to achieving climate neutrality and the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The EU has put forth the Green Deal Industrial Plan to accelerate the transition to climate neutrality while also securing its industrial lead in the fast-growth net-zero technology sector.  As part of this Plan, the proposal for a Net-Zero Industry Act, aims to strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of net-zero technologies manufacturing in the EU, make the EU energy system more secure and sustainable and create better conditions to attract investments and to set up net-zero projects in Europe.

To complement the Net Zero Industrial Act, the EU is investigating the potential for strategic cleantech partnerships with third countries that can support more diversified and more resilient global value chains. The Southern Mediterranean region is of particular strategic importance given its geographic proximity and its vast clean energy potential, that can be capitalised on. Reinforced clean tech cooperation and investment in strategic infrastructure projects would stimulate the region’s economic growth and reinforce countries’ socio-economic resilience, while also fostering the green transition in the Mediterranean.

The event will feature high level EU representation: the European Commission Executive Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič, as well as the DG NEAR Director-General, Gert Jan Koopman, and the DG ENER Director-General, Ditte Juul Jørgensen. It will also include Ministers from the Southern Mediterranean, representatives from cleantech industries, International Financial Institutions and other key players.
