The conference, organised with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, gathered nearly 100 representatives of authorities, professionals, civil society and young leaders in the Southern Mediterranean region and their peers in Europe to discuss common challenges and priorities for future joint action.
The South Programme contributes towards building a common legal space between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean region based on Council of Europe conventions and other standards. Over the last 10 years, Beneficiaries of the Programme – from Tunisia and Morocco to Egypt and Jordan – have become parties to several Council of Europe conventions, with a focus in areas such as countering human trafficking, preventing and combating economic crime and cybercrime, protecting personal data, and the rights of the child. The South Programme has also supported the harmonisation of national legislation, created and supported networks and provided capacity building in these areas as well as to address other common challenges in the region.
