On December 12-13, the DG NEAR of the European Commission, in collaboration with the "MED-GEM Network" and the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (MTEDD), successfully hosted the National Workshop on "Renewable Hydrogen: Energy Vector of the Future."

Governments around the world are realizing that hydrogen produced from renewable electricity will play an indispensable role in the effort to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. Among the regions that have favorable conditions for producing hydrogen at lower cost is the MENA region. Morocco is ideally positioned to capitalize on a rapidly expanding global renewable hydrogen export market. However, for international trade in renewable hydrogen to become a reality, remaining obstacles regarding policy, market design, certification systems, transport and storage technologies, and investments must be resolved.

The MEDGEM Hydrogen Forum on 12 and 13 December in Rabat – a MEDGEM National Consultation Workshop - provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and consider concrete options to advance the hydrogen agenda in both regions. It identified innovative and replicable practices and models to facilitate the development and implementation of renewable hydrogen projects with a view to initiating joint initiatives. During the workshop, the MED GEM network presented the preliminary results of the consultations carried out over the past months and solicited further contributions from stakeholders to enrich its findings and identify actions and priorities for the MED Action Plan. The discussions were structured around 3 main sessions varying from Regulations and programs to support the production and use of renewable hydrogen to Value chain and infrastructure for hydrogen and its derivatives, including export and finally Finance the development of hydrogen.
