The annual Excellence in Road Safety Awards on 26 June 2018 showcased six inspiring initiatives from France, Hungary, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom aimed at reducing risks on Europe’s roads – and ultimately saving lives.

Road safety in the EU has improved significantly in recent decades. The number of deaths fell by 43 % during 2001-2010, and by a further 20 % in the period 2010-2017. However, while some Member States continue to make progress, EU-wide fatality rates have stagnated. In response, the European Commission proposed new measures for safe roads, among which are updated rules for infrastructure safety management.
Aspirational yet attainable targets are important political tools for improving road safety performance, a fact also acknowledged by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Such targets communicate the importance of road safety, motivate stakeholders to act and help to hold road transport system managers accountable for achieving defined results.
The Safe System approach to road safety should be a way to work towards Vision Zero. The two concepts are usually presented together.
Working with local partners, Bristol has secured funding to support over 100 new low-emission buses in the region.
