Foreword

Dear readers,

Summer is ending with a strive for new projects. We are now in crucial times of a new Commission coming in and with an Ocean Pact announced by President von der Leyen as one of her political priorities. This initiative would provide a single reference framework for all ocean-related policy actions during the next Commission’s mandate.

This month, I will also have the opportunity to meet the ministers responsible for the ocean, inland waters and fisheries of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States, with the aim of improving ocean governance and accelerating the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture.

Many of you might have experienced this summer unprecedented warm sea waters and marine heatwaves. I would invite you to watch the latest episode of the Euronews Ocean series on marine heatwaves, produced with our collaboration.

On the scientific front, join us on Wednesday 25 September for the 2024 Fisheries Science Seminar on Artificial Intelligence!

Finally, we’re also rolling up to the World Clean-Up Day on Friday 20 September – and there is still time to join in and to organise your very own #EUBeachcleanup!

Warm regards,

Map of the month

Drifting buoys track ocean temperature monthly

Marine heatwaves, which are prolonged periods of extreme ocean temperature increases, have been occurring more frequently and with greater intensity in recent years. These heatwaves have harmful effects on ecosystems, marine industries, and human activities. Scientists use drifting buoys as one method to monitor ocean temperatures. These buoys move freely in the ocean and collect temperature data automatically, which is then relayed by satellite for immediate use in forecasts. The map displays temperature measurements from drifting buoys worldwide for the previous month.
