Prof. Marc Gunter from Imperial College London on Colorectal Cancer

March is colorectal cancer awareness month. Colorectal cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Europe with over 350 thousand new diagnosis estimated in 2022 and nearly 160 thousand deaths associated with the disease. While the majority of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer are above age 60, there are worrying trends of growing incidence in younger individuals.

Quote Dr. Gunter is Chair in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention and co-directs the Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Research Unit at the School of Public Health, Imperial College London, UK. He is a molecular epidemiologist and his main research focus is the role of metabolic and endocrine pathways in cancer development and prognosis, and one of the coordinators of the EC-funded DISCERN project.

Opening Remarks by Commissioner Stella Kyriakides at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference in Milan on 22 March 2024

Commissioner Kyriakides referred to the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer.
Quote The goal is to offer breast, colorectal and cervical cancer screening to 90 percent of eligible citizens. It highlights the need to follow European guidelines and quality assurance schemes. For breast cancer, these guidelines have been developed through the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer. They provide evidence-based recommendations for screening and diagnosis, and can be adapted to suit local contexts. The quality assurance scheme defines a common set of requirements for breast cancer services, and it covers all stages of care. It is voluntary, but services that wish to be certified must meet all the requirements in the scheme.
