February 29 was the Rare Disease Day

The European Platform for Rare Disease Registration (EU RD Platform) copes with the fragmentation of rare disease patients data contained in hundreds of registries across Europe by providing an infrastructure (ERDRI) with appropriate tools for addressing this. Rare Disease month 2024 was dedicated to trainings directed to registries on these tools.

Opening Remarks by Commissioner Stella Kyriakides at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference in Milan on 22 March 2024
Commissioner Kyriakides referred to the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer.
The goal is to offer breast, colorectal and cervical cancer screening to 90 percent of eligible citizens. It highlights the need to follow European guidelines and quality assurance schemes. For breast cancer, these guidelines have been developed through the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer. They provide evidence-based recommendations for screening and diagnosis, and can be adapted to suit local contexts. The quality assurance scheme defines a common set of requirements for breast cancer services, and it covers all stages of care. It is voluntary, but services that wish to be certified must meet all the requirements in the scheme.

Brussels, 28 March 2024
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of premature death in the European Union. Every year there are over 6 million new patients and more than 1.8 million deaths. Behind these numbers there is a person. A person with loved ones who are also affected. The key to tackle this is an effective focus on prevention.

The goal of Europe's Beating Cancer Plan is to prevent cancer, to improve diagnosis and treatment options, and to help patients to survive their illness. But it aims for much more.
