Vice-President Schinas shows solidarity with the Jewish community ahead of the Munich Security Conference

Ahead of the Munich Security Conference, European Commission Vice-President for Promoting our European Way of Life, Margaritis Schinas, joined the Jewish community in the Munich’s Ohel-Jakob Synagogue to show solidarity with Jews across Europe and worldwide during these times when antisemitism is alarmingly on the rise.

Vice-President Schinas also met with the families of Israeli hostages and listened to their personal stories. He expressed once again the support of the EU for the Jewish community in these difficult times and stated firmly that hate and antisemitism have no place in our European way of life and that nothing justifies terror.

The meetings organised by the World Jewish Congress, lead by its CEO Maram Stern and Vice-President Charlotte Knobloch, brought together United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, US Special Envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism, Amb. Deborah Lipstadt, and Member of the German Bundestag, Tobias Lindner.

European Commission presents work on combating antisemitism during CULT Committee in the European Parliament

Dr. Pascale Falek, Policy officer in the office of the Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, presented European Commission's work on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life during the CULT Committee of the European Parliament dedicated to an 'Exchange of views on Antisemitism in the educational sphere'.

The focus of the exchange of views was on antisemitism in the educational sphere.

Among the speakers were Ms. Joanna Goodey, Head of Unit Justice, Digital and Migration at the EU Fundamental Rights Agency in Vienna, Ms. Nonna Mayer, Professor Emeritus at the Centre for European Studies and Comparative Politics at Sciences Po as well as Ms. Anna Makowka-Kwapisiewicz, researcher at the European Network Countering Antisemitism through Education (ENCATE).

Members of the European Parliament CULT Committe took also part in the discussion.

Strengthening the remembrance of the Holocaust, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity to reinforce democracy in the EU

A new call for proposals for EU action grants in the field of European Remembrance under the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Value Programme (CERV) has been published.

The legacy of recent European history is a crucial pillar of the values the EU stands for. At a time marked by historical distortion and revisionism, a return of war in Europe due to the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and an unprecedented rise of antisemitism and other forms of hatred in Europe, following the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on 7 October 2023, remembrance of and education about common 20th century European experiences become even more pertinent for all parts of society, particularly for the next generation and people in positions of power.

The "Strengthening the remembrance of the Holocaust, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity to reinforce democracy in the EU" is priority 2 of the CERV Programme.
