As part of her visit, the University bestowed upon Katharina von Schnurbein an Honorary Doctorate in recognition "for her unhesitating efforts to formulate and implement a policy to eradicate antisemitism in Europe, and her wholehearted belief in the importance of equal opportunities and peace among all people of all faiths".

Referring to the award, Ms. von Schnurbein stated:

“It is a tremendous honor to receive this honorary doctorate from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. And it humbles me because as an EU official and a citizen, I am simply doing my job. Amidst the current tsunami of antisemitism, I am determined to use all tools at hand at the European Commission to work towards a society free from antisemitism and all forms of hatred, and speak up against injustice and discrimination, so that Jewish life in Europe can flourish. CALLS FOR PROPOSAL

OPEN CALL until 18 September 2024 on Protecting EU values and rights by combating hate speech and hate crime

The European Commission is inviting civil society organisations to put forward project proposals that will help Protecting EU values and rights by combating hate speech and hate crime.

The online world has amplified the negative effects of hate speech. Hate crimes are a direct violation of the victims’ fundamental right to dignity, to equality and non-discrimination. Recently, the EU is experiencing an alarming increase in hate speech and hate crime, including physical and online attacks targeting in particular the Jewish and Muslim communities in Europe.

Projects under this priority should aim to enable civil society organisations to establish mechanisms of cooperation with public authorities in particular to support the reporting and recording of episodes of hate crime and hate speech; to ensure support to victims of hate speech and hate crime; and to support law enforcement, including through training or data collection methodologies and tools. Projects should also focus on activities to tackle hate speech online, including reporting content to IT companies, designing counter narratives and awareness raising campaigns, and educational activities to address the societal challenges of hate speech online.
