METTINGS & ACTIVITIES
EU Antisemitism Envoys share insights on developing a U.S. national strategy

Following the announcement by U.S. President Biden on 12 December 2022 to adopt a U.S. national action plan to counter antisemitism, six Special Envoys on combating antisemitism, including EU Coordinator on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life, Katharina von Schnurbein, met at the White House with U.S. officials and Congress representatives to share best practices and insights.

The U.S. national action plan falls within the main priorities of the White House inter-agency group led by staff of the Domestic Policy Council and the National Security Council to increase and better coordinate U.S. Government efforts to counter antisemitism, anti-Muslim hatred, and related forms of bias and discrimination within the United States.

Katharina von Schnurbein shared EU best practices on developing its own first ever EU Strategy on combating antisemitism and fostering Jewish life and stated:

"This meeting is an expression of the close transatlantic ties in the fight against antisemitism and other bigotry. Strategizing and exchanging best practices on action plans against antisemitism is fruitful. We don’t have to reinvent the wheel but can learn from each other.”

U.S. Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff welcomed special envoys at the White House, alongside White House senior officials and Deborah Lipstadt, U.S. Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism.

Beyond the EU Coordinator, the delegation included envoys and coordinators of Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, Norway and the Organisation of American States. The envoys also held a hearing with the Bi-partisan Task force on antisemitism at the U.S. House of Representatives and met with Senators Ben Cardin and Jacky Rosen.

Meetings were also held at Miami and Los Angeles City Councils. The meetings were convened by the American Jewish Committee.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The European Commission opens public consultation on 'Defending European Democracy'
As announced in the 2023 Commission Work Programme, the Commission intends to put forward a ‘Defence of democracy’ package to strengthen the resilience of the EU democratic space against covert foreign interference.

The European Commission is now calling on all Europeans to take part in the public consultation and share their views on the envisaged measures to provide transparency of foreign interference and on how such an intervention could contribute to improving the resilience of democracy in Europe. At the end of the questionnaire, citizens have the possibility to upload additional documents, data or papers in case they wish to participate further.

The Commission will publish a consolidated and anonymous analysis of all responses to the consultation.

The consultation is open until 13 April 2023 and can be accessed it here.
