No New Deal on Drought

Some participants at COP 15 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification called for a legally-binding deal on drought, but settled on establishing a new Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought.

date:  18/08/2022

Côte d’Ivoire hosted the COP 15 of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in May 2022. Thirty-eight decisions were adopted during the meeting to improve drought resilience, reduce land degradation, and invest in land restoration. A notable omission from the final COP 15 outcomes was the legally binding global agreement on drought proposed by the African Group.

Instead, an Intergovernmental Working Group on Drought was established to explore existing global, regional and national drought policies to promote proactive, rather than reactive, responses. The European Commission’s Global Drought Observatory will be relevant in this context, as are knowledge pieces like the digital StoryMap on the AKP about the way satellite imagery can be mobilised to support local farmers during harsh environmental conditions.
