How can cities best cooperate with scientific institutions and improve evidence-based city science policy-making? This is one of the main questions upon which the City Science Initiative  is based, a city network supported by the JRC, DG Research and Innovation, and DG REGIO.

In a series of workshops, the CSI explored how city science happens in different cities. As result, the first report was presented to the European Commission by six mayors of the more than 55 participating cities. In 2020 the Cities Science Initiative published the City Science for Urban Challenges and in 2022, the CSIities Science Initiative published their Urban Regional Research Ecology, which identifies the key values, dynamics and organizational elements that need to be in place for good collaboration between city and university. The network also organised various informal sessions with their city members to share knowledge, city science projects and best practices. One of the public sessions took place on October 5th during the last European Week of Regions and Cities CSI organised a session that focused on how the paradigm of city science contributes to climate resilience. Please find the conclusions here.

In 2023 the City Science Initiative focuses  on how universities can be a catalyst for local change towards sustainable cities. Want to learn more about our local approach? Please contact prof. dr. Caroline Nevejan, CSO of the City of Amsterdam.
