On October, 14, 2021 the JRC published its latest report : ‘Building Urban Datasets for the SDGs’, describing the experience of 6 European cities in monitoring the 2030 Agenda.

Starting in 2020 and during a 2-year period, Bratislava (SK), Reggio Emilia (IT), Oulu (FI), Porto (PT), Seville (ES), and Valencia (ES) have experimented on the creation of a local SDG monitoring system, testing their own capacity to inform local policies using data. The report provides feedbacks on the applicability of the methodology proposed by the European Handbook for SDG Voluntary Local Reviews, as well as on alternative or complementary approaches and indicators suggested by cities to monitor SDGs with respect to local specificities. It also highlights the main areas of work as well as useful strategies on which to focus in the future in order to overcome the challenges related to data availability, collection and analysis, to support evidence-based decisions and foster policy-making aligned to the SDGs framework at local level.

This report was launched in the framework of the European Week of Regions and Cities 2021, and discussed in the workshop session “European cities localising the SDGs: experiences and lessons learned
