Soil biodiversity and related ecosystem function data measured in LUCAS 2018 sites across the EU
In the LUCAS 2018 survey, soil biodiversity and related ecosystem functions have been measured in the 881 sampling sites selected for the soil biodiversity assessment across Europe.
These soil functions include soil aggregates (i.e., mean width diameter and water-stable aggregates), enzyme activities, microbial respiration and biomass, and measurement of ester-linked fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs).
Among others, this dataset includes measured attributes for mean width diameter, water-stable aggregates, water holding capacity ... Read more

EU Soil Strategy Action Tracker
EUSO launched the EU Soil Strategy Actions Tracker. This new tool tracks the progress of policy actions listed in the EU Soil Strategy for 2030.
The EU Soil Strategy for 2030 sets out a framework and concrete measures to protect and restore soils and ensure that soils are used sustainably. It aims to achieve healthy soils by 2050 with concrete actions by 2030. The newly developed EU Soil Strategy Actions Tracker is designed to track the progress of these concrete measures and actions of ... Read more

Land and Soil Management Award
The award sheds light on outstanding achievements, encouraging new concepts of land and soil protection and their implementation in land management, as well as enhancing awareness about the importance of land and soil functions, in Europe and extended territories.
The prize rewards land use and soil management practices mitigating soil threats i.e. soil degradation, erosion, reduction of organic matter content, diffuse contamination, and compaction as well as the reduction of soil biodiversity, salinization, sealing, flooding and landslides. In doing so, the award sheds light on outstanding achievements, enc ... Read more

Reminder: Survey on Proximal Sensing, Drones and Soils
EUSO has put out a questionnaire to collect data from airborne-, drone- or proximal sensor surveys. The deadline for contribution is extended to 5 February 2025.

There is increasing realisation of the potential of sensors to assess soil properties. However, there is still a lot of unexplored potential to use sensor-derived data for a more complete and cost-efficient monitoring of soil health. For example, the possible integration of data coming from sensors with other data streams (soil sampling surveys, e ... Read more

46 publications in Scopus indexed journals from the JRC EUSO team in 2024
In 2024, the JRC EUSO team published 46 papers in peer review journals. The section on Publications in Journals includes around 440 published papers from the Soil Group in the JRC. Most of the papers refer to the last 11 years (2013-2024). We consider the following papers to be highlights of 2024:
- A unifying modelling of multiple land degradation pathways in Europe. (Nature Communications)
- How the EU Soil Observatory is providing solid science for healthy soils. (European Journal of Soil Science)
- Soil health is associated with higher primary productivity across Europe. (Nature ecology & evolution)
- Fire effects on geomorphic processes. Nat. Rev. (Nature Reviews earth & Environment)
- Cadmium in topsoils of the European Union – an analysis based on LUCAS topsoil database. (Science of the Total Environment)
In most cases the papers refer to corresponding datasets published in ESDAC. Find all of EUSO's Publications in Journals here.

Research & Innovation
A key objective of the EU Soil Observatory is to support research and innovation, and to intensify targeted research, data and monitoring on soils. This includes supporting the Mission Soil, and the EUSO’s in-house research activities.
