In 2023, Ireland made notable progress in FTTP infrastructure and invested significantly in the digital literacy of its population, according to the second annual EU State of the Digital Decade report, published in July.

However, significant challenges persist in addressing the ICT specialists’ gap and in advancing e-Health initiatives, where progress is still slow.

For Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) infrastructure 78.5% of households are covered, with +8.9% annual progress, placing Ireland further above the EU average coverage of 64%. On the other hand, Ireland should increase efforts to achieve the EU target on e-Health by developing digital solutions such as patient apps and shared care records. Currently, the country is scoring 11.4 out of 100 for access to e-health records, much below the EU average of 79.1.

The Digital Decade report is based on JRC’s methodologies and evaluates the EU’s progress towards the 2030 digital transition targets. The EU’s digital transition is key to making European public administrations and businesses fit for the digital age. The European Commission offers guidance to EU Member States to successfully advance towards jointly agreed targets in the digital transformation journey.
