As we follow the same rules, play in a team and share challenges, we become closer to one another despite our differences, we bridge social barriers, cultures, and even languages. On 1 December, at the #BeInclusive Sport Awards Gala, Commissioner Gabriel announced the organisations whose work stood out for increasing social inclusion for disadvantaged groups. It is important to give recognition and visibility to those actors that silently, but with tireless generosity and solidarity, do their best to reach people who are used to being left behind.
Beside the role that sport plays in our communities, it is of course essential to our wellbeing, as it makes us feel good in body and mind. For six years, the #BeActive campaign launched during the European Week of Sport has helped tackle the inactivity crisis by encouraging Europeans to embrace a healthy an active lifestyle, which makes it especially important in this year’s context. On 8 December Commissioner Gabriel announced the winners of the three categories of the #BeActive Awards. It was a great opportunity to gather virtually and celebrate the success of all those who put all their efforts in showing how to be active despite the terrible consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commissioner also re-launched the #BeActiveAtHome campaign, encouraging people to try out an activity at home and post it on social media with the #BeActiveAtHome hashtag.
