Your monthly update from the Joint Research Centre
|
|
Dear colleagues,
This summer again, Europe is going through extreme heatwaves, with fires ravaging our forests and droughts hitting our lands. The latest JRC research found that almost half of the EU’s territory is at the risk of drought, worsening the crop yield outlook and lowering hydroelectric power production.
In such times, the necessity of the green transformation could not be more compelling. This is why we started a major communication campaign showcasing cutting-edge JRC research supporting both the green and digital transitions. Last month, we launched the foresight report “A Green and digital Europe”, which looks at how we can shape a carbon-neutral EU by 2050. In the campaign, we unpack the key requirements that can make or break the green and digital transitions. We also put forward JRC’s research on digital solutions, such as innovative mobility or precision digital tools for agriculture.
In other articles, we take a look at Italy’s first-of-a-kind renewable energy community and visit a Dutch data centre, which implemented energy efficiency best practices from the JRC’s Code of Conduct. We also delve into the different ways how JRC research contributes to making batteries better, safer, and greener.
Stay tuned as you will be soon able to discover more about a Spanish region’s strategy to overcome the difficulties linked to the twin transition and the JRC reparability scores helping customers choose more sustainable products.
Happy reading, Stephen Quest, JRC Director-General

The twin green & digital transition: How sustainable digital technologies could enable a carbon-neutral EU by 2050
|
On June 29, the European Commission presented the 2022 Strategic Foresight Report "Twinning the green and digital transitions in the new geopolitical context", which builds on the JRC’s Science for Policy Report "Towards a green and digital future. Key requirements for successful twin transitions in the European Union".

Limited progress on environmental and climate protection in the Western Balkans
|
The Western Balkans made some improvements in aligning environmental and climate monitoring, as well as reporting legislation with EU standards. Implementation, however, is patchy, concludes a JRC report.

A green and digital future: 7 insights from strategic foresight
|
Digital solutions have vast potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions, but they can also lead to a higher environmental burden. The JRC’s recent foresight report: “Towards a green and digital future” identified the key requirements that the EU needs to meet to make sure the green and digital transitions reinforce each other.

5 digital solutions for a greener Europe

Magliano Alpi: a peek at the energy communities of the future (video interview)
|
The JRC has been assisting Italy’s first-of-a-kind energy community with data, know-how, and simulation capacity. During the Covid 19-induced lockdown in 2020, many of us were busy trying to bake sourdough bread and ordering yoga mats.
Marco Bailo, the mayor of Magliano Alpi, a commune of 2200 inhabitants in Italy’s Piedmont region, had a different idea. Putting his background as an architect to good use, he built Italy’s first renewable energy community. Watch our video, in which Mayor Bailo, Professor Olivero, and JRC expert Antonio De Paola discuss the early days of the Magliano Alpi energy community, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arose with it.

Climate variability drives global decline of forest resilience
|
Understanding the underlying mechanisms of forest resilience is of paramount importance to develop sound conservation and management plans. In a new study led by JRC and published in Nature, researchers have integrated satellite-based vegetation indices with machine learning techniques to show how forest resilience has changed within the timeframe from 2000 to 2020.

International Symposium on Transportation Data & Modelling (ISTDM2023)
|
In order to drive the transformation of the transport sector, models and data are needed: on the one hand, to anticipate possible impacts of new mobility solution; on the other hand, to define the requirements of the future transport system to achieve the sustainable development goals set by our society. In particular, approaches to manage the ever increasing transport complexity in urban contexts, with the interaction between traditional services any new mobility options, are very much needed.
ISTDM2023 wants to contribute to this process, by offering scientists a forum to discuss progresses and challenges to properly model and manage the future of transport systems.
It also wants to give the scientists the opportunity to meet policy members to understand their needs to shape future legislations in the transport field.
Registration to the event will open soon.

Annual Research Conference 2022 - How to turn green in the European way?
|
One of the main objectives of the European Commission is to accomplish the targets of the European Green Deal: climate-neutrality, a zero-pollution target for industry, sustainable food systems and a circular economy. The Annual Research Conference 2022 (ARC22), organised by the Joint Research Centre of the EU Commission and the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs will focus on these issues and, in particular, progress in state-of-the-art economic research, with a specific focus on EU policymaking. The European Commission would like to invite professional researchers to pitch their work during a dedicated session at the event. Participation in the Call for Pitches is available on the Conference webpage. To apply, please send to ecfin-jrc-arc@ec.europa.eu by 01 August 2022 a 50- to 100-word summary of your research clearly identifying the topic from the above list with which it matches, including the motivation, question, hypothesis, and findings of your research, along with your contact details and the link to your academic profile. You will be notified about the acceptance of your pitch by 20 August 2022.
