Launch of the ICPA

Marking a historic moment, the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA) officially started operations at Eurojust on 3 July 2023.

Speakers at the ICPA launch event
L-R: ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan, Justice Minister of the Netherlands Ms Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin, Eurojust President Ladislav Hamran, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and US Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr.

The ICPA is a unique judicial hub embedded in Eurojust to support national investigations into the crime of aggression related to the war in Ukraine. Thanks to the ICPA, independent prosecutors from different countries will be able to work together in the same location on a daily basis, exchange evidence in a fast and efficient manner, and agree on a common investigative and prosecution strategy.

8th EU Day Against Impunity: stepping up the fight with national, EU and global responses

In recent years, it has become manifest how universal or extraterritorial jurisdiction have served as powerful tools of last resort in the fight against impunity against the gravest crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. Convictions have been obtained connected to crimes committed, for example, in Syria, Afghanistan or Rwanda, for crimes dating as far back as 40 years. Intensifying efforts to work towards ending impunity for core international crimes was the theme for this year’s EU Day Against Impunity, which was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 22 May.
