ETIP SNET R&I Implementation Plan 2025+ now published

The ETIP SNET R&I Implementation Plan 2025+ has been published and can be retrieved from the Publication Office of the European Union.

By 2050, the extensive electrification in (nearly) all sectors of the energy system, combined with significant energy efficiency improvements and CO2 reductions in all sectors, will lead to a carbon-neutral energy system. It is widely understood that this will rely on: The massive use of renewables for electricity, transport and heating & cooling generation; Smart Grids technologies (Digitalisation and Smart control of flexible generation and demand, sustainable buildings); The combination of the above with sector coupling of all energy carriers via storage (such as batteries, by use of liquids (e.g., hydro pumping), CO2-neutral or CO2-free gases) and conversion technologies (for extensive use of carbon-neutral gases and green fuels and possibly hydrogen in industry, transport and buildings); A widely adopted circular approach to energy systems with high recycling rates.

To support Europe’s energy transition by guiding and identifying research and innovation R&I priorities addressing the innovation challenges for the energy system, ETIP SNET publishes and updates key documents that consolidate the views of more than 350 stakeholders. These are Roadmaps (RMs) covering a ten-year timespan and Implementation Plans (IPs), which are limited to a 3-4-year time window. These documents are regularly updated to identify the most pressing R&I priorities in the energy field for the next years. The ETIP SNET R&I Implementation Plan (IP) 2025+, released on the Publication Office of the European Union, covers the 2025-2028 timespan with a total overall proposed budget of 954 M€ for R&I. This version updates the previous 2022-2025 edition.

The Implementation Plan describes the details of the most urgent R&I needs to be tackled through the European Commission and national R&I work programmes and calls (notably Horizon Europe Multiannual Framework). The ETIP SNET proposed Project Priority Concepts based on the 9 High Level Use Cases (as defined in the ETIP SNET Roadmap 2022-2031) intending to underline the urgency of realising the transformation of today’s energy system through concrete R&I projects into the needed (partially) renewable energy system of 2031 and the fully CO2-neutral energy system of 2050 as the ultimate goal.

Just published: ETIP SNET White Paper, “Hydrogen’s impact on grids”

The “Hydrogen’s impact on grids  - Impact of hydrogen integration on power grids and energy systems” has been published on the Publications office of the European Union and is available on the Publications section of the ETIP SNET website. The report has been drafted by the ETIP SNET WG1 with the support of the WG3.

The EU is undergoing an energy transformation towards a climate-neutral continent by 2050. It has set targets to progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards clean energy to reach this goal and deliver on the EU’s Paris Agreement commitments. These high-level climate targets will require structural changes in various sectors and impact society and the economy. Decarbonisation is reached mainly through electrifying various sectors (currently relying on fossil fuels) stemming from variable Renewable Energy Sources (vRES) and low-emission sources complemented by low-carbon gases.

Open Call for Applications to the ETIP SNET WG5 Co-chair

The ETIP SNET has 5 Working Groups (WG) covering several key sectors toward the energy transition. Each of them is led by 1 Chair and 2 Co-Chairs.

Every year the ETIP SNET proceeds to the renewal of Working Groups (WG) Chairs and Co-Chairs positions.

After the first internal call for candidatures by the current WGs members for the opened positions, the ETIP SNET is now launching an open call for the WG5: Innovation implementation in the business environment Co-Chair position.

The roles of the WG Chairs and Co-chairs are to:

  • Represent the WG internally with respect to the overall ETIP SNET governance
  • Represent the WG externally with respect to participation in external events
  • Coordinate the WG`s activities

These activities will be closely supported by an assigned WG Supporting Manager.

If you are interested to apply (and/or you need any further info), please send the filled in the application form & CV to etipsnetworkinggroups@etip-snet.eu and m.bracken@clerens.eu.

Working Groups updates

WG1

The White Paper on “E-mobility deployment and impact on grids” is published and can be found here.

The “Hydrogen’s Impact on Grids” is published and can be retrieved from here.

The TF on Energy Communities’ Impact on Grids, drafted in cooperation with ISGAN, has faced some unexpected delays as it pertains to key contributors and foresees the drafting to be finalised by Q3 of 2023.

The Energy Infrastructure Planning has now started and is in the phase of collecting reference material and initiate gap analyses on existing legislation and project findings.

WG2

The paper for TF KPI on Energy Storage Applications paper has been published and can be found here.

Talks between the WG2 and Chair Team are taking place to see what specific papers can be put forward by the WG2 with some ideas being proposed to the WG2.

Furthermore, a new chair teams is in the process of being evaluated.

WG3

The White Paper “Coupling of Heat/Cooling and Electricity Sectors in a Renewable Energy Driven Europe”, released at the beginning of this year here, was discussed during a dedicated webinar, which can be rewatched on the ETIP SNET website.

The WG3 is currently working on two position papers: "Hydrogen Ramp-up" position paper led by Peter Johnson and a second position paper on “Ramp-up of renewable generation and its effects on system level” led by Thai Phuong Do with deadlines for September.

WG4

A questionnaire on the policy paper on Energy Data Spaces have been circulate among ETIP SNET Governing Board, Executive Committee and members with the aim to collect the opinions of industry and practitioners to complement the preparation of the policy paper. On the third week of august a feedback analysis will be carried out, in order to deliver a first draft will the EC and GB at the end of the month. The final version will be available in September. On the other hand, the timeline and expected delivery time for the Playbook on Consumers' and Citizens' Engagement Proposal has been modified, shifting from the end of Q3 to November 2023. Finally, the new Task Force within the Skills Workstream was confirmed and WG4 members were invited to indicate their interest in collaborating or participating in the next draft of the white paper on Digital Skills.

WG5

The final version of the policy paper on Regulatory Sandboxes is ready to be submitted. Compared to the previous versions, this one also includes the DSO of Greece through EDSO, the review of the members of the association EUREC, the outcome of the approval process within the Governing Board of ETIP SNET and the consultation of all Working Groups, as well as some final noncritical corrections to the script. The paper has received feedback and is moving to the finalisation stages of the paper.

The WG5 also has a co-chair position that is currently open. For more information, please click here.
