Parliament votes on EU methane regulation, with stricter rules for imports
On 9 May, the European Parliament approved a new law to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector. The new law covers direct methane emissions from the oil, fossil gas and coal industries. MEPs call for the petrochemical sector to be included in these regulations.

Germany prepares to fight the EU over electricity supply zones
Talks on Germany’s future electricity market are heating up as all parties await a key analysis from grid operators amid looming threats from Brussels to split up the country’s wholesale market bidding zone. In spring 2024, the country’s four grid operators are expected to present a report examining the recommendation by EU agency ACER to split the German bidding zone. If they fail to agree, the Commission, as a measure of last resort, will then decide whether to amend or maintain the bidding zone configuration within six months.

Emirates, global renewables agency want to triple green energy by 2030
On 11th May, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the United Arab Emirates clean energy company Masdar have joined forces to create a pathway to triple the world's renewable energy capacity by 2030, by signing a memorandum of understanding to create a project to identify the challenges slowing the introduction of renewable energy in different regions and develop recommendations ahead of COP28.

IEA Analysis Reveals Surge in Clean Energy Manufacturing Projects
Since late 2022, the estimated output by 2030 from existing and announced manufacturing projects is up by 60% for solar PV and 25% for batteries, driven by supportive policies, corporate strategies and growing demand. A new analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights a rapid increase in manufacturing projects for key clean energy technologies. Solar PV, batteries, and electrolysers have experienced accelerated growth, propelled by policy support and investor interest. While solar PV and batteries are on track to meet future demands, wind, heat pumps, and electrolysers lag behind.
