DG REGIO and EUROSTAT organize City Statistics Expert Group Meeting (NUAC) 16-18 June 2025 in Brussels. In connection to this meeting, there will be SCORUS Conference which is open to public. In 2023, life expectancy at birth in the EU was 81.4 years, marking an increase of 0.8 years from 2022. The EU region with the highest life expectancy at birth was the Spanish region of Comunidad de Madrid (86.1 years), followed by Provincia Autonoma di Trento in Italy (85.1 years), Åland in Finland (85.1 years), Comunidad Foral de Navarra in Spain and Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano/Bozen in Italy (both 85.0 years).

A joint initiative led by Eurostat, DG REGIO and the JRC was adopted by the UN this month to establish global definitions for urban and rural areas. It presents a harmonised methodology to facilitate international statistical comparisons and to classify the entire territory of a country along an urban-rural continuum.
