Preparing for the European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO)

As a major initiative under the European Strategy for Universities, the European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO) will be available by the end of 2024. Building on ETER, U-Multirank data and other data, the EHESO platform will be a valuable resource designed to provide comprehensive insights into the European higher education sector. What is EHESO?

EHESO is a centralised platform that integrates diverse EU data and transparency tools, including the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER), U-MULTIRANK, Eurydice and other relevant data sources.

It will provide comprehensive insights into the European higher education sector through four major tools:

  • A European Higher Education Scoreboard monitoring the policy agenda of the European Union by showcasing relevant indicators on countries and higher education systems.
  • An institutional Benchmarking Tool allowing institutions to compare and benchmark against a large sample of EU and OECD universities.
  • A Student Observatory as a major European tool to inform students about study options in Europe and at European higher education institutions.
  • An open access Data Centre offering open access to micro data.

What is the relevance of EHESO to graduate tracking?

EHESO offers easier access to data and enhanced transparency, also supporting the design and implementation of effective graduate tracking systems. It facilitates comparative analyses, helping identify trends and best practices. Policymakers can use EHESO data to create and monitor evidence-based policies, supporting the Network’s objectives. Universities can benchmark their performance against peers, improving excellence in participating institutions. Graduates gain access to comparative information, aiding in their study and career decisions.

The European Commission identified the Eurograduate survey as a relevant data source for the further EHESO development. Already in the first release of the European Higher Education Scoreboard (planned for end 2024), EHESO will seek to use some Eurograduate indicators (national level). Over time, cooperation of EHESO, Eurograduate and the European Network on Graduate Tracking should allow further synergies and deeper analysis.
