The event is a flagship event series of EMODnet, with OSL 3.0 organized in collaboration with the European Commission DG for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DGMARE), Copernicus Marine Service, the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), Flanders Marine Institute, Belgium (VLIZ) and Marine at University Gent.

This edition was fully virtual, with a series of live online sessions between 6-24 March for ideation, dialogue and team formation. The main goal of the Hackathon was for diverse users to test the newly unified EMODnet data services and to innovate solutions and applications using open source marine data to address six Ocean challenges. The winning teams, announced during the live Award Session on 30 March, will join EMODnet and the wider marine community at European Maritime Day 2023.
