EMODnet Secretariat joins a visit of the EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, to Oostende

On Monday 6 September 2021, the EMODnet Secretariat was invited by local Blue Growth and innovation actors Blue Bridge and Flanders’ Blue Cluster to welcome EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius on his ‘Blue Economy’ visit to Oostende (Belgium) and share insights on the importance of open marine data sharing and the role EMODnet is playing in unlocking the wealth of European ocean observations and in situ data.

Jan-Bart Calewaert, Head of the EMODnet Secretariat highlighted the win-win partnerships that EMODnet is developing with the Blue Economy sector.

The InnovOcean site, Oostende, has hosted the EMODnet Secretariat since 2013 and is also the location of the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) that hosts and coordinates the EMODnet Central Portal and EMODnet Biology. At the event, Jan-Bart Calewaert, Head of the EMODnet Secretariat highlighted the win-win partnerships that EMODnet is developing with the Blue Economy sector to provide marine knowledge for operations at sea and the green transition. He also noted the support that EMODnet’s EU public data service offers to industry - and all data producers – to enable the sharing and management of marine environmental and human activities data through EMODnet Data Ingestion, to integrate data collected by industry and other diverse sources and make it Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Resuable (FAIR) for all.
