'Choose France' Summit attracts a promised €15B in foreign investment

Among the announcements, Estonia’s Skeleton Technologies, one of the first ever companies to be funded by the EU’s start-up funded the European Innovation Council, will invest €600 million in the country. A DARPA-like agency could boost EU innovation — but cannot come at the expense of existing schemes

Part of the EU’s dilemma is that it already has substantial funds for research designed to support what it calls “disruptive innovations”. In 2021, it created the European Innovation Council (EIC), which has an annual budget of €1 billion.

Slovenia's government wants to overhaul its startup policies

Sifted | 14/05/2024 | In 2023, Slovenia was marked as the worst in Europe for implementing startup friendly policies — but it is trying to turn that around. By 2030, the ministry wants Slovenia to have at least 476 startups per million inhabitants — twice as many as today — and for its startups to raise 10 times more money than they currently do (€41 per capita now versus a target of €410 per capita). It also wants its startups to reach the European average acceptance rate when applying to European Innovation Council programmes — the EU vehicles that give grants to and invest equity into European deeptech startups.

Calls to scrap EIT mount as Fraunhofer slams the EU technology institute

The paper says resources currently directed to the EIT should to be put back into FP10, in particular to support the European Innovation Council (EIC), the EU’s main start-up fund.

What associated country status means for UK social sciences and humanities researchers

Blog LSE | 17/05/2024 | On 1 January this year, the UK became an associated country to Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research scheme, and to the EU’s Earth observation programme Copernicus. The signing of the agreement on associated country status in September 2023, which came into effect on 1 January 2024, changed the conditions of access for UK applicants to Horizon Europe and Copernicus funding by granting applicants to calls in the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2024 onwards the same rights as EU participants, with very limited exceptions. These limitations affect access to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Fund and to programmes where eligibility for individual funding calls is restricted to member states or certain other countries under existing work programmes.
