UK and EU renew research ties with new London hub and chips partnership

Science|Business | 14/03/2024 | Europe - As a hub set up by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology to build UK participation in Horizon Europe opens its doors, the UK joins the EU semiconductor partnership. In addition to getting involved in the KICs, the London hub also aims to promote the participation in other parts of Horizon Europe, including the European Innovation Council, industrial partnerships, and the EU Missions.

Personalized medicine between digital twins and brain-machine interfaces

Artificial intelligence allows to explore application perspectives in a new way such as those based on new generations of brain-machine interfaces that we are developing together with the startup IIT Corticale Srl, or in the Crossbrain project coordinated by the University of Rome Tor Vergata and funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC).

Cost of damage to Ukraine’s scientific infrastructure over $1.2B and ‘growing every day’

Science|Business | 2/03/2024 | Ukraine - The total cost of reconstructing Ukraine’s public science infrastructure currently stands at more than $1.26 billion (€1.15 billion), according to a study by UNESCO. Russia’s invasion in February 2022 has caused severe damage to Ukraine’s scientific institutions, especially its universities, and UNESCO is highlighting the need for further protection. The EU has set up several initiatives to support scientists in Ukraine and those who have been forced to flee the country. In December last year, the European Innovation Council launched a €20 million package of support for start-ups.

Techcelerator, recognized by the Financial Times as being among the most important hubs for startups in Europe

Biz | 16/03/2024 | Romania - Techcelerator, the SEED accelerator aimed at advanced technology startups from Romania and South East Europe, has been recognized by the prestigious business publication Financial Times in the Europe's Leading Start-Up Hubs 2024 report, a ranking of the most important hubs for startups that offer incubation and/or acceleration programs for people who want to start or grow a company. Techcelerator is ranked 51st in Europe and third in Eastern Europe with 74,763 points.

DVO | 13/03/2024 | Belgium - Azalea Vision BV (Ghent), developer of smart contact lens technology, has been selected as a laureate of the "European Innovation Council (EIC) Transition" program, with 2.5 million euros in funding awarded. This prestigious award places Azalea Vision among the top innovators in smart lenses and highlights its potential to revolutionize eye care.

EIC selects 27 projects to receive funding; 3 are from the Netherlands

Silicon Canals | 12/03/2024 | The Netherlands - The European Innovation Council (EIC) has announced that 27 projects have been selected from the September 2023 EIC Transition cut-off. Out of the total, three are from the Netherlands. These successful proposals were chosen from 257 eligible submissions and will each receive a grant of up to €2.5M. Participants from 16 EU Member States and Horizon Europe-associated countries have been selected.

Start-up receives 2.5 million subsidy for needle-free injection technology

Hawk Biosystems and Alias ​​Robotics Accelerate the European Commission's "EIC Accelerator"

Parke | 13/04/2024 | Spain - With this support, a grant of €2.5m and up to €4.5m in capital, the companies will introduce a predictive diagnostic test in hospitals to improve the response of cancer patients to immunotherapies. Located in the Zamudio/Derio Campus of the Basque Technological Park, Hawk Biosystems is a biotechnological company founded by the Francis Crick Institute in the United Kingdom, and aims to ensure that cancer patients receive treatment exactly when they need it.

14 deeptech soonicorns in Europe

Sifted | 14/03/2024 | Finland - Of the estimated $15bn invested in European deeptech companies in 2023, $3.4bn went to British businesses, while France and Sweden secured $3.2bn each. Semiconductor and energy startups saw the biggest uptick of interest from VCs. ICEYE, a spinoff of Aalto University propelled by a European Innovation Council grant, develops data satellite services for security and industry purposes and owns a constellation of satellites that generate high-resolution remote-sensing imagery.

The Catalan ecosystem of innovation in quantum technologies gains momentum with the support of the Government

InfoNegocios | 13/03/2024 | Spain - The Catalan quantum cryptography startup LuxQuanta, one of the spin-offs of the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), has been the only Catalan company of the 42 European companies selected in the latest call for the European Innovation Council Accelerator (EIC), the program of acceleration framed in the EU funding program for research and innovation Horizon Europe. The EIC, which offers support to emerging companies and SMEs that promote innovative and disruptive products, services or business models, has already chosen the ICFO's other quantum technologies spin-off, Quside, in the previous call for the startup acceleration program.

Portuguese scientists develop more sustainable refrigerators

The technology, with more efficient refrigeration, is currently intended for vaccine transport systems. A team of Portuguese researchers is committed to developing the refrigerators of the future. They used magnetocaloric materials to create a more efficient and sustainable refrigeration technology. With funding from the European Innovation Council they now want to develop a refrigerator for transporting vaccines.

AbilityPharma receives funds to advance pancreatic cancer trial

Clinical Trial Arena | 12/03/2024 | Spain - Catalan biopharmaceutical company AbilityPharma has secured a €7m ($7.65m) investment to progress its Phase IIb clinical trial of ABTL0812, an autophagy inducer that targets metastatic pancreatic cancer. The investment round included contributions from a European-Canadian life sciences syndicate consisting of CTI Life Sciences Fund, Inveready, the EIC Fund, Fitalent and CDTI Innvierte.

Safety-creating technology is introduced in all nursing homes in the municipality

Linköping | 12/03/2024 | Denmark - After a successful pilot project at Kärna and Berga nursing homes, safety-creating technology will now be introduced at all nursing homes in the municipality. Ekhult's nursing home is one of the homes that has now started using digital aids. The project is one of the many reasons why Linköping won a prize at the iCapital Awards and was named Europe's most innovative city.

European Capital of Innovation Awards 2024: Call for Applications

Pledge Time | 14/03/2024 | Europe - The European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), supported by the European Innovation Council (EIC) under Horizon Europe, recognize those European cities that open their governance practices to experimentation and aspire to be models for other cities, pushing the boundaries of technology for the benefit of their citizens. Jean David Malo, Director of the European Innovation Council and the Executive Agency for SMEs, inaugurated this edition in a ceremony in Linköping (Sweden)the emerging European city for innovation of 2023.
