Parliament to demand bigger budget for Horizon Europe in 2024
MEPs’ ambition is to up funding for the European Innovation Council, and for health and climate research. But this is once again at odds with budget cuts proposed by EU governments.

European Innovation Council to adopt lump sum funding next year, sources say
The continuing roll out of lump sums across Horizon Europe is coming to the €10B European Innovation Council in 2024. Meanwhile, EU auditors are calling for ‘technical changes’ to this approach to disbursing grants. The new approach to EU research funding will apply to grants awarded by all three EIC-run programmes – Pathfinder, Transition and Accelerator. According to insiders, under the 2024 EIC work programme, each of the schemes will have one lump sum call (that will include Transition, which only runs one annual call).

A STEP towards supporting EU competitiveness and resilience in strategic sectors
The “Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform” (STEP) aims to boost digital, net-zero and biotechnologies and enable the EU’s industry to achieve the digital and net-zero transitions. “STEP was once foreseen to be the new European Sovereignty Fund – but it is not", said lead MEP for the Industry, Research and Energy Committee Christian Ehler (EPP, DE). "We ensured a properly functioning European Innovation Council to continue being the EU´s leading equity investor for strategic investments”, he added.

Michiel Scheffer at the EU Industry Days 2023
Europe’s green tech start-ups face up-hill battle accessing financing and public procurements. While attending the EU Industry Days 2023 in Málaga, Spain, EIC Board President Michiel Scheffer stated that "[t]there will need to be a shift in the way savings and pensions are invested, away from investment in property. [...] The challenge is to invest in the jobs of the future, because it’s only the jobs of the future that will pay the pensions. Bricks don’t pay pensions.”

SDS Optic signed a financing agreement with the EIB for up to EUR 10 million
EIC supported company gets support from the European Investment Bank in scaling up its cancer detection technology. The purpose of the agreement with EIB is to support the continuation of research and development work aimed at intensifying the development of the inPROBE technological platform, including the use of the platform in new applications.

EIC-funded CorWave announces the grand opening of its manufacturing facility on the banks of the Seine, next to Paris
Founded in 2012, CorWave's mission is to provide healthcare professionals with solutions to save heart failure patients and offer them an active life, by developing and manufacturing innovative cardiac assist devices. A member of the French Tech 120, CorWave was founded in 2012 by start-up studio MD Start and is funded by renowned investors including Bpifrance, Exor Ventures, EIC Fund, Financière Arbevel, M&L Healthcare, Novo Holdings, Seventure Partners, Sofinnova Partners, Ysios Capital and Vlerick Group. The company has secured over €80 million in equity and employs over seventy people.

Microsure secures €38 million to advance its microsurgical robot, MUSA-3
The financing round welcomes a host of new investors, including the European Innovation Council Fund (EICF), kineo, Invest-NL, and several prominent private investor groups. Microsure’s commitment to innovation has also been recognized with an EIC Accelerator grant.

Top-of-the-Line Molecular Analytics Instrument with Transformative Sensitivity will enable Rapid Identification of Tumor Antigens. Bruker’s timsTOF Ultra platform, launched in June 2023, will be instrumental in the further development and maturation of the PeptiCHIP microfluidic chip technology, supported by the EIC Transition PeptiCHIP grant.

Finalists of the European Capital of Innovation 2023 competition unveiled
The European Commission announced on Friday, October 6, 2023, the six finalists of the "European Capital of Innovation" (iCapital) 2023 award. All finalists will be invited to join the working group of the European Innovation Council Forum (EIC Prizes Alumni Network), made up of previous iCapital Prize finalists.
