First “Green Deal” funding from European Innovation Council awards over €307 million to 64 startups set to support the recovery plan for Europe

The European Innovation Council has awarded over €307 million to 64 game-changing ‘green deal’ start-ups and SMEs contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal Strategy and the Recovery Plan for Europe. Winning proposals range from innovative solutions for the automotive, aerospace and maritime sectors to advanced materials or Internet of Things technologies.

CureVac gets €75M EIC loan for vaccine development
The European Investment Bank and CureVac have signed a €75 million loan agreement for the development and large-scale production of vaccines, including CureVac's vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2. The loan was made through the European Commission's InnovFin Infectious Diseases Finance Facility (IDFF).

EIC Equity Fund set up
The EIC Fund will provide equity from €0.5m to €15m to companies selected for blended finance (grant and equity) under the EIC Accelerator. This is the first time the European Commission, through the European Investment Bank, will make such direct equity investments in companies, with ownership stakes expected to be in general from 10% to 25% in start-ups.

EIC Advisory Board presents Roadmap and Vision for future
The independent report recommends key performance indicators of societal impact, economic impact and diversity. While commending the new approaches taken in the current EIC pilot, the Board recommends further improving implementation by drawing lessons from venture capital. The Report recommends shorter and simpler applications, quick feedback and agile decision-making.

BotsandUs close funding round of over €5M

BotsAndUs, is a London-based startup created by two Romanian engineers. It develops robots that work with people in public spaces like retail stores, shopping centres, airports and office buildings. The idea is to digitise the full customer journey and offer 24/7 customer support. The company just closed a $6 million equity funding round.

Robot panda helps autistic children socialise

Plusme is a soft panda robot designed by Pathfinder project IM-TWIN to help children with autism spectrum disorders. Plusme aims to motivate children to interact with a parent or a therapist, during therapeutic activities. It supports the development of basic social skills, like eye contact, joint attention, request of engagement, or social referencing.

Leaf Space raises €3M in private funding

As the space sector keeps rapidly expanding, businesses coming up with the best technologies to meet its new requirements are set to thrive. Leaf Space hopes to make the cut with a service-based approach to ground operations for small satellites. The SME supported by the EIC Accelerator raised €3M in a second round of investments in June 2020.

BRAINIAQS uses quantum technology for brain imaging

The purpose of the BRAINIAQS project is to set quantum sensing technology in life science innovations, which continuously seek for new techniques of biological imaging allowing precise and non-invasive diagnostics. It will develop and implement arrays of quantum sensors based on superconducting single-photon detectors in a multi-photon microscope.
