2024 in review

Another year has passed quickly for the European Citizens’ Initiative. There were 11 new citizens’ initiatives registered, 10 which opened for signature collection and at least 2.3 million signatures of support collected across all the open initiatives!

The Commission has further worked on the follow-up to 4 ECIs that were answered in 2023.

We wrapped up the ImagineEU video competition for schools and had the pleasure of hosting the 3 winning teams (from France, Italy and Romania) during their study trip to Brussels.

In terms of promotion: 15 people and organisations from across the EU joined the ECI Ambassador programme. They and the existing members commit to making the ECI better known. The ECI was promoted at more than 60 events this year (mostly organised by the ECI Ambassadors) and mentioned in the media more than 300 times.

As the year comes to a close, we’d like to thank everyone who has helped support the European Citizens' Initiative to continue to grow this year: the organisers who bring causes they care about forward. To the supporters – who sign ECIs and spread awareness about our right to take part in democracy. To the teams of people behind the scenes – those in the individual campaigns, at the EU institutions, ECI Forum, ECI Ambassadors and partners. Thank you!

We wish you all a happy and restful holiday period, time with your loved ones, and a great start to 2025. Let's #EUTakeTheInitiative together in the year to come!

Welcoming the new European Commission

The von der Leyen II Commission took office on 1 December 2024 for the next 5 years. The European Citizens’ Initiative is included in the portfolio of the Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, Maroš Šefčovič.

Open for signature collection

Organisers of the ‘Air-Quotas’ initiative start their 1-year signature collection period on 16 December.

This initiative calls for a citizens’ carbon quota mechanism in each country that would encourage businesses to decarbonise through consumer demand.

The organisers consider that it should cover all purchases of goods and services, starting with air transport.

Initiative updates: Status of support per initiative

To be considered by the European Commission, citizens’ initiatives require 1 million valid signatures, and minimum thresholds reached in 7 EU countries.

Several initiatives reached the following significant milestones.

Over 900,000:

Over 390,000:

 Over 200,000:

 Over 160,000:

Follow-up to the ‘Stop Finning – Stop the Trade’ ECI on sharks

Since July 2023, the Commission has taken several steps announced in its reply to this citizens’ initiative. For example, an additional 13 customs codes were created. These will allow, as of January 2025, for collection of import and export data for both carcasses and fins of the most caught and traded shark species.

Check all the updates on the 'EU sharks' protection and manangement' page.

eID activated for Danish ECI supporters

Danish citizens can now use their eID (‘MitID’) to support European citizens' initiatives online. Denmark is the 19th EU country enabling the use of a national eID system for signing citizens' initiatives.

ECI Ambassadors: Activate your inspiration

Throughout the year, ECI Ambassadors spread the word about the ECI in their local context. Since a few months, we’ve been sharing examples so you can get inspired to #EUTakeTheInitiative!
  • Europea Strategy Research Institute, Hungary:

Led a 6-month course on EU policies at the Ludovika University of Public Service. One of the sessions focused on the ECI as a tool for fostering democracy.

  • Rita Almeida and Mais Cidadania, Portugal:

Discussed the ECI, active citizenship and Erasmus+ in workshops for young people, aged 18-27. They also ran several social media campaigns about the ECI.

  • Petra Pospíšilová and EUROPEUM, Czechia:

Celebrated 20 years of EU membership during the ‘Experience Europe’ event in Prague. ECI postcards and leaflets were distributed, and people were invited to get involved.

The ECI Ambassadors help make information about the ECI available at national and local levels and they empower citizens to make use of their EU citizenship rights. Thank you and keep up the great work!

From the ECI Forum

ECI Forum 2024: A Year in Review

As we wrap up 2024, let’s celebrate all we’ve achieved together through the ECI Forum. The ECI Forum team helped (potential) ECI organisers by answering 34 enquiries via the Seek Advice service and supported 8 ECIs through Welcome Calls. Additionally, we hosted 3 webinars, connecting with 60 participants in meaningful discussions.

Behind the scenes, we’ve been working hard on restructuring the new ECI Forum website - set to launch in the new year.

This year, ECI Forum content was visited on average 23 000 times per month, and 1,000 people are registered Forum users – able to profit from specialised services.

Thank you for making 2024 such a remarkable year for the ECI Forum. Here’s to reaching new milestones and fostering even deeper engagement in 2025!

Workshop on the ECI as a tool for active democracy

On 4 December, the ECI Forum team hosted a hands-on workshop with DEAR Programme participants, exploring the ECI as a powerful tool for fostering active democracy.
