Follow-up: ‘Fur Free Europe’ ECI
The Commission replied to the ‘Fur Free Europe’ initiative in December 2023. Since then, there has been a lot of follow-up work to this answered citizens’ initiative.
On-site visits to fur farms to explore the ‘One Health’ controls in place happened in Finland (March) and more recently in Poland (September) and Spain (October).
A survey on fur animals was addressed to Member States authorities allowing the collection of factual information and data that will feed into a Commission assessment of actions mentioned in the communication.
The Commission has also been working on a revision of the Textile Labelling Regulation, including a stakeholders’ workshop that took place in October.

15th Anniversary of the Treaty of Lisbon
Looking for a way to promote the European Citizens’ Initiative?
The 15th Anniversary of the Treaty of Lisbon is coming up on 1 December.
The Treaty introduced a right to “citizens’ initiative” in 2009, paving a way for the ECI to be born (it became operational in April 2012). Since the ECI started, more than 20 million signatures have been collected in support of more than 100 citizens’ initiatives.
The Treaty grants EU citizens more equality, representation and power to participate in EU lawmaking.

ECI Ambassadors: Activate your inspiration
Throughout the year, ECI Ambassadors spread the word about the ECI in their local context. Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing examples so you can get inspired to #EUTakeTheInitiative!
- Tina Đaković and The Human Rights House Zagreb, Croatia:
Participated in a radio interview for Croatian Radio, followed by a media article published on their online portal, to commemorate Europe Day in Rijeka. The ECI was presented as a tool for participation and citizens were encouraged to get involved.
- Leanne Magro and Europe Direct Valletta, Malta:
Published an online article with an overview of the ECI. It also includes information on how to support open citizens' initiatives, highlights success stories, and promoted the European Democracy passport.
- Cristina Santana Acosta and Europe Direct Canarias, Spain:
Gave presentations on the ECI in several schools and at the European Night of Researchers. They are also actively posting on social media.
- European Youth Parliament (EYP) Finland:
Launched a newsletter for secondary school teachers aiming to inform them about activities and opportunities regularly through the year. In one edition, they shared the ECI toolkit for schools with the teachers, suggesting the toolkit can help keep their students engaged with European democracy even after the elections are over.
Thank you and keep up the great work!
