Single Market Strategy: What role for eInvoicing
The European Commission has published its Single Market Strategy, presenting a renewed and ambitious vision for a simpler, seamless and stronger Single Market. One of the key enablers of this transformation is eInvoicing, which features prominently in the strategy’s digitalisation and simplification pillars.
The strategy recognises eInvoicing as a cornerstone of the EU’s digital Single Market, delivering immediate cost savings, improving compliance, and enabling real-time data-driven reporting across borders, as for VAT automated reporting. It outlines several important developments and highlights some elements of the future EU eInvoicing policy:
- A revision of the EU eInvoicing Directive, turning it into a Regulation.
- A Commission Recommendation to ensure all accounting software solutions integrate eInvoicing modules.
- Plans to pilot the reuse of eInvoicing data for sustainability reporting and for customs formalities by linking invoice and customs data.
These actions aim to boost competitiveness, to increase the uptake and interoperability of eInvoicing solutions by companies across the EU, reduce administrative burden for businesses, especially SMEs, and support the broader move toward a data-based Single Market.
The Single Market Strategy confirms the Commission’s commitment to making eInvoicing a driver for economic integration and innovation.
