EU Climate Action

The 28th UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) started on 30 November in Dubai. The European Union is calling on all Parties to take urgent action to bring down greenhouse gas emissions this decade and respect their commitments under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

EU Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra met China’s Special Envoy on Climate Change, Xie Zhenhua, in Beijing, to prepare for the COP28 UN climate summit in Dubai. In a frank and constructive exchange, they agreed to increase cooperation on tackling climate change.

The European Union and Canada have displayed their alignment and shared values in the face of current global challenges during the EU-Canada Summit which took place on 23 and 24 November.

The deal will oblige the oil, gas and coal industries to properly measure, monitor, report and verify their methane emissions according to the highest monitoring standards, and take action to reduce them.

On 30 November, President von der Leyen and Executive Vice-President Šefčovič hosted the second Clean Transition Dialogue, focusing on energy-intensive industries.

To help deliver the European Green Deal the Commission has proposed an Action Plan to make sure our electricity grids will operate more efficiently and will be rolled out further and faster.

The Commission has taken another step to make the EU's energy system fit for the future by adopting the first list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs) that is fully in line with the European Green Deal.

In 2022, land roughly the size of Corsica was scorched by wildfires in the EU, according to the latest Joint Research Centre (JRC) report on fires in the pan-European region.

The EU is ahead of its global peers in climate neutral technology innovation, while more effort is needed to commercialise these green innovations and finance the associated scale-ups, a JRC report shows.

There are significant inconsistencies between the land use CO₂ estimates in national GHG inventories and those of the global models. Ahead of COP28, this study co-authored by the JRC provides critical information for the assessment of global climate progress.
