Last month, in a nutshell

Welcome to the October issue of our newsletter! Here are the latest EU climate news highlights.

On 9 October, Wopke Hoekstra was appointed as new Commissioner for Climate Action. Since then, he has been working to ensure COP28 yields a successful outcomefor example at the European Climate Stocktake in Brussels and the pre-COP meeting in Abu Dhabi, where he kick-started discussions on key negotiation topics, such as the Loss and Damage Fund. As we approach COP28, starting in Dubai on 30 November, join the debate at one or more of the EU side events!

October saw another milestone, as two more pieces of the Fit for 55 legislative package – the revised Renewable Energy Directive and the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation – were adopted.

All key sectors of our economy are now covered by legally binding climate targets, putting the EU on the right path to meet its 2030 climate goals.

However, as highlighted by the Climate Action Progress Report 2023, the pace of the EU’s emission abatement efforts must increase for those goals to be achieved. This is why we are doing morefor example, the European Commission has recently presented an action plan to boost our wind energy industry.
